The Abakus Flower Cup 2015

In Aspen this weekend industry experts and enthusiasts gathered in a beautiful private home overlooking the Winter X-Games to judge some of the top strains being grown today in Colorado.  Fourteen samples—from recreational outlets and private grows—competed head-to-head for the crown of the Flower Cup.

AthingofbeautyAll the strains had to be superb just to be considered, so the judges faced a difficult task that took almost five hours. An endless supply of complementary glass one-hitters were provided by 420 Supplies, as well as magnifying glasses for inspecting the resin heads. Buds were crushed, terpenes released, fire applied and smoke inhaled. Before long, the smell inside the house provided therapeutic effect to all who entered.

The Pot Illuminati Altar with its seven candles and original Freedom Fighters flags that helped launch the modern hemp movement overlooked the judges table. Legendary lawman Bob Braudis headed the list of invited celebrities.

DSC06946Bret Bogue (aka The King of Kush) amazed the crowd by naming almost every strain by sight and smell alone. Bret gave the closing address, warning everyone of a coming invasion of corporate grows that dwarf the size of grows now operating. These grows will change the cannabis landscape in the near future. Photographer Alec Pearce documented the entries and judging process and the photos will be featured in the next edition of the Abakus magazine, on sale in April.
